DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo) Background
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) straddles the Equator and is roughly the size of Western Europe. It is located in the heart of the west-central portion of sub-Saharan Africa circled by Angola, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, the Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and Zambia and is separated from Tanzania by Lake Tanganyika.
From 1998 to 2003 the country was embroiled in a devastating war with seven other African nations that is reported to have killed 5.4 million people and left million more as displaced persons.
The related fighting continues to this day in the East of the country, despite the presence of more than 12,000 UN peacekeeping forces.
